Two L.A. Brothers Redefine the Art of the Bolero

Seasoned Duo Transforms the Classic Genre through Exquisite Musicianship.
Mention the name Bolero Soul and the words are apt to conjure up a raft of classic Latino love ballads: Sin Ti, Solamente Una Vez, Sabor A Mi and others. Not that the time-honored genre hasn’t had its own impressive retinue. Los Panchos, Luis Miguel, Javier Solis, even Eydie Gormé were legendary interpreters of the form.
Still, for the thousands acquainted with Bolero Soul there’s something different about them, something undefinable.
Reviews of their performances have praised their “masterful guitar playing,” “rich vocal harmonies,” “professional approach to the classics.” But that doesn’t quite get at the appeal of the two L.A. natives who grew up in a musical family and were drawn to the love ballad when they were still in grade school.
“We were entranced by it from an early age and never stopped admiring it,” says Jose Luis Gutierrez who with his younger brother Arturo form the inimitable duo. The unpretentious pair have toured the country and the world playing small clubs, venues, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries, corporate events and after 45 years that’s exactly how they like it, they say.
The pair has purposely shunned the allure of places like Vegas and other large venues though one could easily imagine that kind of fame to have come knocking more than once. The reason? The two say they’ve no interest in it.
To attend one of their performances you quickly get why. The pair, it seems, were born to do just this one thing – interpret the bolero, and they do it their own way without making concessions to producers, publicists, or record executives. What’s left is a huge following and an impressive catalog of ballads performed in their own inimitable way. (See YouTube: Bolero Soul)
